"The path isn't a straight line; it's a spiral. You continually come back to things you thought you understood and see deeper truths."
My Approach Is...
Evidence-Based - I am trained in and draw from models that have been researched and proven to work.
Trauma-Informed - I am educated in and practice techniques that are safe for those who have experienced trauma.
Creative - Where fitting I am not afraid to deviate from the norm and use creative techniques that incorporate elements of art, movement, and narrative.
Personalized - I am aware that there is no one-size-fits-all in counselling, and what jives with one person may do just the opposite for another. Therefore it is key to create a unique, personalized plan for each person that I work with.
Collaborative - I may be the expert in counselling, but I believe you are the expert on yourself and, if you are a parent, your child (whether you know it yet or not)! I view counselling as a journey together - sometimes I will lead, sometimes you will lead. More often we will walk alongside each other.
Goal Oriented - If we don't know where we're going we definitely won't know how to get there. Flexible goals will help keep us on track and will let us know when we have arrived (and need to celebrate)!
Flexible - Let's face it, despite the best-laid plans there's always a more-than-likely chance that things aren't going to go accordingly. What did John Lennon say again?...oh yes, "Life happens when you make plans."
Compassionate yet challenging - Sometimes we just need an ear to listen and a shoulder to lean on. Other times we need someone to encourage us outside of our comfort zone and be the spark for change. I am here to do both.
I see counselling as I see life, as more of a spiral than a linear line or sequence of destinations. As infants we are on the outer rings of our spirals - our futures are open and broad, our lives yet to unfold, we are yet to discover who we are. As we venture through life, spiralling inwards, things begin to become more defined and refined. We discover our likes and dislikes, what we need to be happy and healthy, who we are and what we want in life. Sometimes we get stuck and repeat the same spiral loop over and over. Sometimes we even feel like we are spiralling backwards! We can also come across the same themes or life challenges over and over as we travel in our spiral, and each time we pass them we get to practice becoming increasingly good at managing them. If we travel thoughtfully, we travel inwards increasingly closer to our "core" selves, our true essence. It is there we find clarity, strength, and confidence in even the most difficult of circumstances.
