Chronic Illness and Chronic Pain
“If opening your eyes, or getting out of bed, or holding a spoon, or combing your hair is the daunting Mount Everest you climb today, that is okay.” – Carmen Ambrosio, author of Life Continues
I specialize in counselling individuals with chronic pain and chronic illnesses, particularly illnesses that are little understood or misunderstood by the medical community and general public. These include but are not limited to:
-
Myalgic Encephalomyelitis / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) /
Systemic Exertion Intolerance Disease (SEID)
-
Fibromyalgia
-
Lyme Disease
-
Multiple Sclerosis
-
Multiple Chemical Sensitivities
-
Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS)
-
Chronic Pain (with known or unknown triggers)
As an individual living with a chronic illness (I was diagnosed with ME/CFS in the winter of 2017), I know the challenges, suffering, and hardships that it can bring. My counselling approach focuses on:
-
Symptom management
-
Decreasing pain using research supported pain management techniques
-
Easing of secondary symptoms such as depression and anxiety
-
Grieving the prior life/life style that was lost due to illness
-
Navigating loss of identity
-
Moving forward and creating a new life within one's new limitations
-
Expanding one's mental and physical capacities, if appropriate
-
Exploring possible pathways towards improvement and/or recovery, if appropriate
My ultimate goal is to leave each person with a greater sense of self, the strength and resilience necessary to overcome future challenges, and the skills needed to live their best life possible.
